Of course I can’t/won’t speak of the writers interpretation,, But for myself,, I am now 63 years old…I raised myself since i was 9 years old & back at that time,, Keep it “Light Enough To Travel” was a saying you would hear from people your grandparents ages & was most commonly used as advice to someone who for whatever reason,, Had to move a lot,, Such as a circus/fair worker,, traveling salesman or in my case at 9,, a homeless person..As such,, You only kept the bare minimums/essential things with you,, So that if needed (which it very often was) you could move at a moments notice..In the end,, When I first heard the song,, I was like wow,, Not only because it’s a great song,, beautifully sung,, but also for me because It was like hearing the soundtrack of my childhood,, Always on the move & Never knowing what might happen next or where I would be on any given day..With it being 54 years later,, Although i’m a humble man,, I can/will say that I am very proud of the man I raised myself to be.

Thanks for the reminder, another forgotten album that deserves a play.
Agreed regarding this track being a ‘Single’ The charts were still diverse enough back then for this to have got airplay.
I saw the band live on a few occassions in small venues, a great live act.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I heard the song performed by some of the actors in a series on Paramount +.
I immediately thought it was a traditional song but couldn’t place it.
A quick search online and it came up with Woody Guthrie and Billy Bragg. How can this be? I wondered. All is now clear and I then realised that I actually have the album ‘Mermaid Avenue’ but have not listened to it for years. Better seek it out.

Thanks, Nate. Certainly a clumsy choice of words from me, but then this entire piece needs re-writing from the ground up. It’s on the todo list, promise.

I do still believe the album is over-produced to the point where some of the songs—this one in particular—are not done justice. That’s why I like that live version: the song is given space to sing, and the artists are given space to emote.

That all being said, I’ll listen to the album again with fresh ears. Thank you.

How in the world can you not like the album version???? I am literally flabbergasted by that statement. The album version is PURE PERFECTION. The last 1:15 might be the best ending of any song. Pure gold.

I don’t seem to be able to locate the CD itself in my spare room. The band were not particularly famous, but I found the song on a Bob Harris compilation. Will locate it in due course once this writing project finds some legs.
